As time passes and technological advancements continue, can the ‘n’ in ‘NDC still stand for ‘new’?

With airlines changing the way they market and provide access to content, IATA’s New Distribution Capability (NDC) promises both benefits and potential challenges for all. NDC is a technology programme developed to standardise API (application programming interface) distribution, but uncertainty about what exactly it is clearly remains pervasive.

What is clear is in the past week it has passed two key milestones in its path to becoming the new ‘norm’ for the industry.

Travelport passed a significant milestone in the process after the travel commerce platform managed the live booking of flights using the NDC technical standard, while Skyscanner has become the first travel search engine to join the NDC Exchange platform developed by the Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO) and SITA that simplifies the adoption of the NDC standard and which enables airline to connect directly to a new distribution ecosystem.
